UNICAL Matriculates 9251 Students For 2017/2018 Academic Session

University of Calabar, UNICAL Matriculates 9251 Students For 2017/2018 Academic Session.

This was made known by the vice chancellor of the University, professor Zana I. Akpagu. In his welcoming speech, he disclosed that “About 27,028 candidates wrote the screening test from which 9,251 candidates were offered admission having being found successful in the biometric UTME “.

He went further to disclose the number of successful students in all the 14 faculties; “Our data shows clear picture of the 2017/2018 admission as follows; Faculty of Agric – 423, Faculty of allied medical science – 645, Faculty of art – 1043, Faculty of basic medical science – 675, Faculty of biological science – 945, Faculty of dentistry – 77, Faculty of education – 2226, Faculty of Engineering – 115, Faculty of law – 203, Faculty of management science – 785, Faculty of medicine – 159, Faculty of pharmacy – 47, Faculty of physical science – 783, & Faculty of social science – 1125”.

The vice chancellor made an assurance on number increase in students intake; “These figures will change/increase drastically as the university is going to place more emphasis on the courses needed most.

“The number of intakes has tremendously increased due to the introduction of new programs such as Dentistry, Marine biology, Human nutrition, Foods science, Pharmacy, Engineering, Mass communication, Music amongst others. However, this number increase in students intake has significantly impacted on existing facilities such as lecture halls, hostel accommodation and other utilities. On that note, we are spending greater part of our revenue in maintaining existing Infrastructure. Consequently, students are advised to cooperate with the University in ensuring that they do not deliberately destroy or damage any facilities already put in place”.

Prof. Zana also highlighted some of the best university traditions and culture and made it known to the matriculating students that they are expected to abide in the course of their studies “This includes among others; payment of school charges, faculty and departmental registration, library registration, school ID, enroll in approved social groups and associations, As the University now have zero tolerance for students who don’t pay fees.

“With the assistance of the _Federal Government_ through the *TETFUND*, the university is building new lecture halls, hostel accommodation. Equally,  private individuals have  been invited to partner with the University for the provision of hostel accommodation. In addition we are equipping the class rooms with new chairs, white boards, and public address systems”.

The vice chancellor who was once a malabite (and always a malabite) with his 3 top most priorities; *STUDENTS, STUDENTS, STUDENTS* warns all matriculating students against cultism and other social vices; “The university now have an E-library section with over 500 computers to facilitate E-learning. We want to put our students afar and other students globally and to prepare you for the 21st century work place.

“It is important to know that you are not expected in any way or manner to socialize with any association that has not been prescribed by the University such as secret cults, plagiarism, corruption and other vices.

“I need to further caution you to show respect to your colleagues, staffs in the University to make your stay fruitful and productive, be modest and decent in your dressing and approach to issues.

“Once again I congratulate all the matriculating students and I wish you a productive and fruitful stay in the great republik of Malabo otherwise known as *UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR”.*
